Young's introduction to golf was largely influenced by his family. His father, David Young, was the head professional at Sleepy Hollow Country Club for 20 years, and his aunt is a teaching professional.
Young played college golf for Wake Forest University.
As an amateur he won the 2015 US Collegiate Championship, 2015 Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, 2015 MGA Ike Stroke Play Championship, 2016 MGA Ike Stroke Play Championship, 2019 General Hackler Invitational, 2019 Augusta Haskins Award Invitational and 2019 Stitch Intercollegiate (medallist).
Young was named the 2019 Jack Nicklaus Award winner as the Division I Golfer of the Year.
He earned his PGA Tour card for 2021–22.
He was voted PGA Tour Rookie of the Year for the 2021-2022 season with 94% of the votes.
Young began his professional journey on the Korn Ferry Tour.
He won the 2021 AdventHealth Championship with a total score of 269 (-19). Runner up was Dawie van der Walt.
He won the 2021 Evans Scholars Invitational with a total score of 266 (-18). Runner up was Adam Svensson 5 shots behind.
