The word Titleist was based on the idea of 'holding the Title'. A Champion holds the Title. Champions use Titleist balls.
The first Titleist golf balls were produced by Acushnet in 1935. The ball had been carefully and thoughtfully designed to do away with many of the imperfections of previous golf ball manufacturing processes and the executives involved in the development wanted a word - a product name at the time - that represented the very best.
