Overview

Current Format (as at 2024)

Features alternating stroke play rounds of best ball (fourball) and alternate shot (foursomes) since 2000. Previously it was 36 holes of stroke play (pre-1954) and then 72 holes of stroke play.

Team Format: Each country is represented by one team of two players, selected based on their Official World Golf Ranking.

Historical Significance: The event gained prominence in the 1960s and 1970s but faced challenges in the 1980s, leading to periods when it was not held. It was incorporated into the World Golf Championships series from 2000 to 2006.

Recent Changes: After 2006, the tournament was no longer part of the WGC but continued to be sanctioned by the International Federation of PGA Tours. The format has shifted to accommodate changes in the golf calendar, including the inclusion of golf in the Olympics.
